Explore the Beauty of Frontenac State Park
High on the bluff overlooking Lake Pepin and the Mississippi River, you’ll find one of the most scenic Minnesota State Parks. Though there are plenty of places to enjoy gorgeous river views in Red Wing, one of our favorites is Frontenac State Park. Frontenac State Park overlooks Lake Pepin, a naturally occurring lake on the Mississippi River.
Frontenac State Park offers visitors diverse habitats to explore, including hardwood forests, prairies, and the signature high bluffs this part of the Mississippi River is known for. These habitats offer exceptional habitats for wildlife, including red fox, coyote, woodchuck, wild turkey, deer, and more.
Frontenac State Park is also an exceptional spot for birdwatching, especially during the spring and fall migrations along the Mississippi Flyway. There have been around 260 different species of birds found at Frontenac State Park, including species like nesting bald eagles, falcons, gulls, geese, terns, shorebirds, and more.
There are approximately 13 miles of great hiking trails throughout Frontenac State Park. The trails range from easy and flat to challenging and steep, each offering different scenic vistas of the park and river. The Sand Point Trail is a great, flat trail to take if you want to enjoy some time on Lake Pepin Beach, but if you’re looking for gorgeous views from the top of the bluffs, consider the Bluffside Trail.
The Bluffside Trail at Frontenac State Park is a 2.7-mile look that takes you along the upper bluffs, down to Lake Pepin, and past In-Ya-Teopa Rock. In-Ya-Teopa Rock, a popular point of interest at Frontenac State Park, is believed to hold sacred religious significance to the Dakota Indians who once lived here. The rock, which features a large hole through the middle, sits on top of the bluff and is worth seeing. This and other trails in Frontenac State Park are also great for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.
