Canyon Valley Trail and Other Outdoor Things to do in Red Wing

It’s not surprising that Cannon Valley Trail was named “Best Trail” by Minnesota Monthly. The 20-mile paved trail is a standout rail-to-trail conversion that offers visitors a scenic and accessible route through Southeastern Minnesota. Stretching from Red Wing to Cannon Falls, the trail provides diverse natural beauty, a variety of recreational opportunities, and rich history.

Visitors to Cannon Valley Trail can access the trail from three free parking lots. The trail is free of charge for walkers, wheelchair users, and cyclists under the age of 18. A wheel pass must be purchased for those using non-motorized bikes. This small fee contributes to the maintenance and updates of the trail. There are ample spots to rest, cool off in the river, and learn more about this beautiful area.

Nature lovers will marvel at the diversity of scenery along the Cannon Valley Trail. Visitors are treated to beautiful overlooks of the Cannon River and the Wetland Observation Deck. They will pass by moist limestone cliffs that are home to wild ginger and a variety of ferns and mosses. At the Cannon River Turtle Preserve, the floodplain forest is home to the state-threatened wood turtle, often found sunning on logs. The 20-year-old, 100-foot-long beaver dam is an excellent place for wildlife photography and birdwatching.

There are also a variety of historical sites to visit. At the Train Wreck site at milepost 80, there are over 100 pieces of spilled granite ranging in size from a suitcase to that of a grand piano. At the Highway 61 rest area, the “railroad flycatcher” is a dangling artifact leftover from the Cannon Valley Trail’s railroad days.  There are two archaeological sites near Red Wing, as well as a standing brick fireplace from an abandoned church camp.

Whether you seek a leisurely stroll or an invigorating bike ride, the Cannon Valley Trail provides visitors with a memorable experience among Minnesota’s most beautiful landscapes.
